Marietta, Georgia – March 29, 2010 – The Georgia Tea Party™, a non-partisan advocacy group headquartered in Marietta, Georgia has announced that it will sharply increase its grass roots efforts to force repeal of the National Health Care bill, which was recently signed into law by President Obama.
The primary focus will be on supporting specific bills now pending in the state legislature that will impede the implementation of the law, and letting the public know how each Georgia state legislator votes on such bills; publishing how the U.S. Congressmen from Georgia voted on the federal healthcare bill; and, supporting a constitutional challenge to the bill by the state of Georgia.
Currently the Georgia Tea Party is actively supporting several bills and resolutions working their way through the Georgia General Assembly that would prevent an automatic implementation of this “one-size-fits-all” federal law. Senate Bill 399, for example will prevent any state agency from implementing any portion of the law until a thorough review of costs and benefits has been made and reported to the General Assembly, after which both houses will vote on whether or not to authorize implementation. Senate Bill 317, which recently passed the Senate, would amend the Official Code of Georgia to provide that no law shall compel any person, employer, or health care provider to participate in any health care system. It would ensure that persons and employers can pay directly for lawful health care services without penalties or fines. HR 1086, which is being reconsidered by the House, mimics SB 317 except that it calls for an amendment to the Georgia Constitution to do so. The Georgia Tea Party also is supporting related bills, such as SB 407, which would stimulate competition among health insurers by allowing for interstate sales of health insurance products. The Georgia Tea Party is urging all concerned citizens to call their state senators and state representatives and ask them to support these bills and resolutions.
While the Georgia Tea Party does not endorse any candidate or party, the positions taken on these bills by members of the Georgia General Assembly will be noted and published so voters in the upcoming primary and general elections can base their decisions on the incumbents’ voting records.
The Georgia Tea Party is very disappointed with Georgia Attorney General Thurbert Baker’s announcement that he would not stand up for Georgia citizens and resist this unconstitutional power grab by Washington, D.C. It certainly leads citizens who cherish our Constitution to seriously question the attorney general’s grasp of basic constitutional principles and his commitment to fighting for what is right. Therefore, the Georgia Tea Party will actively support Governor Perdue’s efforts to appoint a “special attorney general” to litigate against implementation of the health care law on constitutional grounds.
Georgia Tea Party Chairman, J.D. Van Brink commented that Georgia voters are incensed by the arrogant, cynical methods used by the liberal majority in Congress to force this unconstitutional law on the American people. “This is evident by the substantially increased contributions that the Georgia Tea Party has received just since the bill’s signing. Based on phone calls and emails we’ve gotten, we expect to see a surge in new volunteers as well. The reaction of the people to this bill tells us that they want the Georgia Tea Party Board and volunteers to work even harder to have this bill repealed and to return our government to the principles of the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution. It will happen because the People will make it happen,” Van Brink said.

Rally will feature live music, speeches and bus transportation to the Capitol
Marietta, Georgia – March 22, 2010 – The Georgia Tea Party™, a non-partisan advocacy group headquartered in Marietta, will hold a Tax Day rally at 3:00 pm on April 15th at the Sears Outlet Store parking lot, 1140 Roswell Road (across from the Big Chicken). The rally will feature live music by Jeremy Guider and rousing speeches by Tea Party members. The Marietta rally will be the staging point for buses to transport concerned Marietta citizens to Atlanta, where a massive rally will take place in front of the Capitol building. The Atlanta rally is expected to attract tens of thousands of patriots from all over Georgia who are protesting high taxes, profligate government spending and the health care bill that was rammed through by the liberal majority in Washington. At last year’s Atlanta rally, nearly 20,000 protestors packed the streets for several blocks around the Capitol. This year even more are expected, with many coming from Cobb County and Marietta.
Buses providing round-trip transportation from the Marietta rally will depart at 4:30 pm. Individual tickets for the bus ride are $20.00 and can be obtained from Georgia Tea Party volunteers, or online from the Georgia Tea Party website, www.thegeorgiateaparty.org and clicking on the ‘donate’ button. The deadline for getting bus tickets is March 31st.

Marietta, Georgia – March 22, 2010 – The Georgia Tea Party™, a non-partisan advocacy group headquartered in Marietta, has endorsed Georgia Senate Bill 399, which would amend Chapter 1, Title 50 of the Official Code of Georgia Annotated, to prohibit any Georgia department or agency from implementing any provision of federal health care reform legislation unless the General Assembly authorizes such implementation by statute.
The bill, sponsored by Senators Judson Hill of the 32nd District, Chip Rogers of the 21st, John Wiles of the 37th, David Shafer of the 48th, Jim Butterworth of the 50th and Lee Hawkins of the 49th, requires that any state agency that would implement a new federal health care law must determine the estimated cost to taxpayers, and report that to the General Assembly along with an explanation of the benefit or impact on Georgians. Then, based on that information, the General Assembly would determine if it should authorize, by statute, the implementation of the new federal health care law in Georgia.
On Wednesday, March 17, SB 399 was passed unanimously in the Senate Government Oversight Committee. The bill now awaits action in the Rules Committee, which must approve the bill before it goes to the full Senate for a vote.
Georgia Tea Party Chairman, J.D. Van Brink said that SB 399 will be a valuable vehicle to ensure that any federal healthcare legislation would be an improvement for the people of Georgia and that the costs and benefits associated with such a law would make sense to Georgia taxpayers. “The pending federal healthcare bill imposes a ‘one size fits all’ solution that reason tells us cannot possibly be applicable to all states. Further, the federal mandates to purchase insurance pose an undue burden on individuals and businesses that could have a negative affect on individual finances and Georgia’s economy. SB 399 helps maintain Georgia’s Tenth Amendment right to have the final say regarding the implementation of any federal health care law, and the volunteers and board of the Georgia Tea Party strongly support it,” Mr. Van Brink said.

| This is the final week to STAND OUR GROUND on government run healthcare. If you have been postponing contacting the Congress, DO NOT DELAY any longer. We have just received reports that 4 congressmen that were “NO” votes have switched to a yes vote (see pink highlight below). We need to keep the pressure on Georgia’s Blue Dog Democrats (see yellow highlight below). Encourage your friends in other states to contact the others listed as well. The vote on government run healthcare will come this week. Even though a majority of the public is against the current plan, the administration and Congress seem determined to pass it. From the reports that we are reading, Organizing for America is calling for its volunteers to pledge 10 million hours in SUPPORT of passing the current legislation. They now have over 9 million pledged.5 Facts About ObamaCare by Tim Cameron from American SolutionsHere are five key facts about ObamaCare that you should know. If you want to get active and start doing meaningful things to stop this bill make sure to include them in letters-to-the-editor, calls to talk radio, and conversations with you Congressman and his/her staff.
1) Nearly half of a trillion dollars in Medicare cuts. This is a program that will be broke in six years, yet the Senate bill does nothing to put it on firm financial footing 2) Dramatic expansion of government. The Senate bill creates 159 new offices, agencies, and programs. What will these new agencies, commissions, and programs do? They will regulate, they will dictate, they will spend. 5) Taxpayer funded abortion coverage. Individuals can use federal subsidies to help pay for insurance that covers abortion, and they buy abortion coverage through an insurance exchange that the federal government creates, funds, and administers. Thus the federal government will be actively promoting and facilitating the purchase of abortion coverage. Patriots, NOW is the time to “STAND OUR GROUND”. EVERYONE needs to CALL, FAX, EMAIL, or VISIT congressional offices locally and in DC this week. We’ve prepared a letter which you can download (click here to download) and modify as you desire to fax or use as a script for contacting your congressman and the following list of ‘Blue Dogs’. These have been identified as swing vote representatives. Faxing is better than emailing if there is a fax number available below. Passage of the bill could come down to just a single representative’s vote. So, your calls, faxes, and visits could make the difference. This is a HIGH PRIORITY action item. Through all of your efforts, we’ve been able to stall this legislation since last summer. Let’s make a final stand to put this legislation in the trash can for good. Thanks for all you do to advance liberty! |
